Guide: Compressing Your Workflow for ChatGPT

How to Fit Your Workflow into a Custom GPT

This short guide will walk you through a crucial step for using the workflows with ChatGPT: compressing the instructions to fit within its character limit.

The Challenge: ChatGPT's Custom GPTs have an 8,000-character limit for their instructions. Our detailed workflows are often much longer than this.

The Solution: We will use ChatGPT itself to intelligently summarize the workflow into a concise set of master instructions that it can understand perfectly.

The 2-Minute Process

Follow these steps exactly. It should only take a couple of minutes.

Step 1: Open a New Chat Start a fresh conversation in ChatGPT (a Plus account is required for creating GPTs).

Step 2: Upload Your Workflow Using the paperclip icon, attach the full, original workflow document you downloaded from Workflow Explorer.

Step 3: Use the Compression Prompt Copy the entire prompt below and paste it into the chat with your uploaded document.

I've attached a detailed workflow document. I need to use this to configure a ChatGPT Custom GPT, but the instruction field is limited to 8,000 characters, which is much shorter than my document.

Your task is to create a master system instruction prompt for this Custom GPT. The output must be a single block of text that I can copy and paste directly.

This master instruction must:

1. Clearly explain the workflow's core purpose and methodology.

2. Summarize all phases, steps, and guiding principles from the document.

3. Include strict operational rules so the GPT follows the workflow exactly unless I explicitly tell it otherwise.

4. Specify how to handle multi-phase requests and what to do for out-of-scope questions.

5. Be written in concise, clear language and stay under 7,500 characters to be safe.

Please provide only the final, ready-to-use master instruction prompt.

Step 4: Get Your Output ChatGPT will generate a single, compressed block of text. This is your master instruction.

Step 5: Configure Your Custom GPT Now, go and create your Custom GPT.

  • Copy the compressed text from Step 4 and paste it into the "Instructions" field.
  • Upload the full, original workflow document into the "Knowledge" section.

That's it! Your Custom GPT now has a concise set of rules in its instructions and the full details available in its knowledge base, creating a powerful and reliable workflow assistant.
